Center for Polish Language and Culture named after Irine Skhirtladze (Tbilisi, Georgia)

    Irena Schirtladze ps. «Irka» (b. Lviv, Ukraine,1928 – d. 1944, Warsaw, Poland ) was a liaison officer, nurse volunteer and an activist of the antifascist movement. The oldest daughter of Arkadiusz Schirtladze – a Georgian contract Officer of Polish Army and Janina née Kicińska – Irene Schirtladze joined “the Parasol” battalion as a nurse in August 1944 and followed the combat trail from Wola to Czerniakow, where she was injured while trying to save her wounded platoon commander and died on September 14. She was 16 years old. She is buried in the Military Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw. Irena Schirtladze was awarded the “Cross of Valour”, established in 1920 by the Polish Defense Council.
