Agnès Varda (b. Brussels, Belgium, 1928 – d. 2019, Paris, France) was a film director, screenwriter, photographer and artist, born in Belgium to a Greek father who was a refugee from Asia Minor and a French mother from Sète, in the South of France, where the family lived on a boat during WWII. Agnès then moved to Paris where her pioneering film work became central to the development of the widely influential French « Nouvelle Vague » (lit. New Wave) film movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
