Garden of Monique Wittig (Paris, France)

    Monique Wittig (b. Dannemarie, France, 1935 – d. 2003, Tucson, USA) was a French novelist, philosopher, theorist and lesbian feminist activist. She made a significant impact on feminist theory with the concept of « heterosexual contract ». In 1976, she moved to the United States with her partner Sande Zeig, following her marginalisation due to her lesbianism. In the United States, she worked as a visiting professor at several American universities, including Vassar College and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1990, Wittig became a professor in the Department of French Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She died there from a heart attack.
