Caterina Cornaro (b. Venice, Republic of Venice, 1454 – d. 1510, Venice, Republic of Venice) was born into a well-known and powerful family in Venice that had long associations with Cyprus, especially with regards to trade and commerce. In 1468, she married the King of Cyprus, James II, and on the death of her husband and infant son, Caterina Cornaro ruled Cyprus from 1474 to 1489. She was then forced to cede the administration of the country to the Republic of Venice.
