Mausoleum named after Nakşidil Valide Sultan (Istanbul,Turkey)

Nakşidil Valide Sultan (b. Georgia, 1761- d. 1817, Istanbul, Turkey). She was born around 1761 in Georgia and was brought to the harem at a young age. Other accounts say that she was French, of American origin, and that she was born in Nantes and that at barely two years old, her parents embarked with her for America but were captured by a corsair who took them to Algiers, where they perished. The little girl was purchased by a slave merchant, who recognised her beauty at such a tender age. In Turkey, she married Sultan Abdülhamid I. Eventually she died of tuberculosis in the Beşiktaş Sahil Palace, Istanbul at the age of 56.
