Anna Maria Tussaud (b. Strasbourg, France,1761 – d.1850, London, UK) was a French artist known for her wax sculptures and the wax museum she founded in London. Tussaud moved from France to Switzerland when she was a child and learnt wax sculpting from the doctor she was staying with as a housekeeper. She then moved to Paris, France and created many of her most famous portraits of celebrities such as those of philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire.In 1802, after the Treaty of Amiens, Tussaud went to London with her son Joseph and then on to Edinburgh. She was not able to ever return to France because of the Napoleonic Wars.
