Plaque of Lucie Rie (London, UK)

    Lucie Rie (b. Vienna, Austria, 1902 – d.1995, London, UK), was an Austrian- born British studio potter. Lucie Rie was born in Vienna and studied here. She exhibited at the Paris International Exhibition in 1925, where she won a silver medal. Rie fled Nazi Austria and emigrated to England where she settled in London. During and after the war, to make ends meet, she made ceramic buttons and jewelry for couture fashion outlets. She was influenced by Neoclassicism, Jugendstil, modernism, and Japonism and became highly influential in her field, making brightly coloured, delicate, modernist pottery.
