School named Miriam Makeba (Lille, France)

Zenzile Miriam Makeba (b. Johannesburg, South Africa, 1932 – d. 2008, Castel Volturno, Italy), known as « Mama Africa », was a singer and civil rights activist. In 1959 she left South Africa to pursue her musical career, as her activism made it difficult for her to do so in her native country. Makeba traveled to Venice (Italy) and then reached London (UK), where she met the American singer Harry Belafonte, who helped her enter the United States and formed an artistic partnership with her. However, when she tried to return to South Africa for her mother’s funeral in 1960, she discovered that her passport had been canceled because of her anti-apartheid stance, which caused her to live in exile for over three decades. So she lived in the United States, France, Guinea and Belgium during that time.
