Statue of Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir (Hellnum, Iceland)

    Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir (b. Norway or Iceland, c. 990 – d. 1080, Iceland) travelled from Iceland to Greenland, North-America and across Europe to Rome ca. AD 1000. She is referred to in two sagas and is one of the first Europeans to have traveled to America (then called Vinland by the Norse).
