The Nonnen sisters (Emily, Mary and Charlotte) were three British-Swedish women who lived at Liseberg in Gothenburg, Sweden. Emily Nonnen, who was born in London, England, in 1812 and died in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1906, was the best-known of her siblings. She was a professional artist and a writer and translator who wrote a memoir about her childhood home and travels, published as Systrarna på Liseberg [The Sisters at Liseberg]. Their English father went bankrupt in 1833, but the three sisters supported themselves by working as educators. Emily Nonnen was able to spend a year in Copenhagen in 1838–1839 studying portraiture. On her return, she painted extensively on commission and became a member of Gothenburg’s Society of Crafts and Design (Slöjdföreningen). In later life, Emily translated Swedish literature into English and a number of English books into Swedish, including Alice in Wonderland (1870) and a book on nursing by Florence Nightingale. Two siblings, their eldest sister Ann and only brother Edward, moved away, but the three unmarried Nonnen sisters remained at Liseberg until their deaths. The street was dedicated to them in 1944.
