Street named after Irena Schirtladze (Tbilisi, Georgia)

    Irena Schirtladze, known as Irka (b. 7 April 1928 in Lviv, Ukraine – d. 14 September 1944 in Warsaw, Poland) was a liaison officer, nurse volunteer and an activist of the antifascist movement. The oldest daughter of Arkadiusz Schirtladze, a Georgian contact officer of Polish Army, and Janina née Kicińska, Irene Schirtladze  joined the Parasol battalion as a nurse in August 1944. She followed the combat trail from Wola to Czerniakow, where she was injured while trying to save her wounded platoon commander. She died on 14 September aged 16 years old. She was buried in the Military Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw. Irena Schirtladze was later awarded the Cross of Valour, established in 1920 by the Polish Defense Council.
