The street is named after Marie Bashkirtseff (b. Russian Empire, 1858 – d. 1884, Paris, France). Born Maria Konstantinovna Bashkirtseva in Gavrontsi near Poltava (now Ukraine), she was an artist in Paris up until her death from tuberculosis aged 25. Her journal was published after her death and has since been translated into English.
